    How We Count?

    Words

A word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. For example: "Hello World" = 2 words.

    Characters (with spaces)

Total count of all characters including spaces, punctuation, and special characters.

    Characters (without spaces)

Count of all characters excluding spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Only visible characters are counted.

    Sentences

A sentence ends with a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!). Multiple consecutive punctuation marks count as one sentence ending.

Our Word Counter works entirely in your browser with complete privacy. Perfect for writers, students, and content creators.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I count words in a piece of text?

Paste or type it into the box above. The count updates as you go, so there is nothing to submit. Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs are all tracked at once, alongside estimated reading and speaking times.

Does the character count include spaces?

Both figures are shown: characters with spaces and characters without. Twitter-style limits and most database fields count spaces; some print and typesetting specifications do not, which is why the distinction is worth having in front of you.

    How is a word counted?

A word is a run of characters separated by whitespace, which is the same rule word processors use. Hyphenated compounds such as 'well-known' count as one word, an ampersand standing alone counts as one, and a number counts as a word. Expect small differences against other tools, since none of them agree on the edge cases.

How accurate is the reading time estimate?

It uses 200 words per minute for silent reading and 150 for reading aloud, which are the standard averages content platforms use. Real adult reading speeds range from roughly 150 to 300 words per minute depending on the reader and how dense the material is, so treat the figure as a planning estimate rather than a measurement.

Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?

There is no fixed limit. The counting happens in your browser, so the only real constraint is your device's memory. Full-length manuscripts handle without trouble.

    Is my text private?

Yes. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged; the counting runs entirely on your own device. Refreshing or closing the tab discards the text completely, so it is safe for unpublished work and client material.

How many words is a typical essay, blog post or page?

A double-spaced A4 page in 12pt is roughly 250 words, single-spaced about 500. Blog posts usually run 600 to 1,200 words, and a five minute talk is around 750 words at speaking pace. Paste your draft and check it against the target rather than counting pages.
