    Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two pieces of text?

Paste the original into the left box and the changed version into the right, then click Compare Texts. Additions are highlighted in green, deletions in red, and unchanged lines are left plain so the changes stand out.

Does it compare line by line or word by word?

Line by line, which is how version control tools and most code review interfaces work. A line with a single word changed shows as one deletion and one addition, because the whole line has been replaced.

What can I use a diff checker for?

Spotting what changed between two drafts of a document, checking which lines differ between two configuration files, reviewing an edit someone returned without tracked changes, verifying that a copied block really is identical, and comparing two exports to find rows that moved.

Why do two texts that look identical still show as different?

Almost always invisible characters: trailing spaces at the end of a line, a tab where the other file has spaces, or Windows line endings against Unix ones. Copying text through different applications introduces these constantly.

Is there a size limit on the texts I can compare?

No fixed limit. The comparison runs in your browser, so very large files are bounded only by your device's memory and will simply take a moment longer.

    Are my documents uploaded anywhere?

No. Both texts stay in your browser and the comparison is computed on your own device. Nothing is transmitted or stored, which makes it usable for contracts, source code and unpublished drafts.
