    Frequently asked questions

How do I replace every occurrence of a word in a block of text?

Paste the text, type the word to find and what it should become, then click Find and Replace. Every match is replaced at once and the result appears ready to copy.

What does the Use Regex option do?

It treats your search term as a regular expression instead of literal text, which lets you match patterns rather than fixed strings. For example \d+ matches any run of digits, and \s+$ matches trailing whitespace at the end of a line. Without the option on, every character is matched exactly as typed.

How do I delete something rather than replace it?

Put the text to remove in the find field and leave the replace field empty. Every match is deleted. This is the quickest way to strip a recurring prefix, a stray character or an unwanted tag from a whole document.

    What does case sensitive change?

With it off, 'Cat', 'cat' and 'CAT' all match your search term. With it on, only the exact casing you typed matches, which is what you want when renaming a variable in code or when the difference between a name and a common noun matters.

Why is my regular expression not matching?

Usually an unescaped special character. Full stops, question marks, plus signs, brackets, asterisks and pipes all have meaning in a regex, so to match one literally put a backslash in front of it. Test your pattern in the Regex Tester if it is not behaving.

    Is my text private?

Yes. The replacement is performed in your browser and nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
