About this tool
This converter turns a PDF back into a Word document you can edit, and it does the whole job inside your browser. The PDF is never uploaded, which matters because the files people convert are usually CVs, contracts, reports and letters. A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores fragments of text, each drawn at an exact position on the page. To rebuild a document from that, the converter groups fragments that share a baseline into lines, then joins lines with normal spacing into paragraphs. A line that stops well short of the right margin ends a paragraph, a larger gap starts a new one, and words the PDF split with a hyphen at the end of a line are joined back together. Text set noticeably larger than the body text becomes a Word heading, so the Navigation pane in Word shows the document's outline straight away. Bold and italic are read from the fonts embedded in the PDF, and common font families such as Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri and Georgia are carried across by name. Font sizes are kept. Pictures inside the pages are extracted and placed in reading order at their original size. Each PDF page starts a new Word page, and the Word page size matches the PDF's, so an A4 PDF becomes an A4 document and a US Letter PDF becomes a Letter one. What it does not do is copy the exact layout. Text flows as ordinary paragraphs rather than being pinned in floating boxes, which is what makes the result easy to edit, but it means multi-column layouts become a single column and tables become lines of text. Scanned pages have no text to extract; with the scanned-pages option on, they are kept as full-page pictures so nothing goes missing. Turning a scan into editable text needs OCR, which this tool does not perform.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to Word for free?
Upload the PDF, click 'Convert to Word', then click 'Download .docx'. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no page limit, and the conversion happens on your own device.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read and the Word file is built entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for contracts, CVs and other private documents.
Will the Word document look exactly like the PDF?
The content, headings, bold and italic text, font sizes and pictures carry over, and the page size matches. The exact layout does not: text becomes normal flowing paragraphs so you can edit it easily, which means columns become a single column and tables become lines of text.
Can it convert a scanned PDF to editable Word text?
No. A scanned page is a photograph with no text inside it, and reading text out of a photo requires OCR, which this tool does not do. With the scanned-pages option on, those pages are kept as full-page pictures in the Word file instead of coming out blank.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Not if the PDF needs a password to open. Open it in a PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and convert that.
What programs can open the .docx file?
Microsoft Word 2007 or later, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and WPS Office all open it.
