    4. Click 'Add page numbers and download' to save the numbered PDF.

    About this tool

Page numbers are the first thing a reader looks for in a long report, a thesis, a contract bundle or a printed handout, and they are often missing from PDFs that were merged together or exported from a tool that never added them. This tool stamps them onto every page of an existing PDF, without changing anything else. You choose one of six positions (top or bottom, at the left, centre or right) and one of four formats: a bare number, "Page 1", "1 of 10", or "Page 1 of 10". The total is calculated for you. The starting number can be anything, which is useful when a PDF is one chapter of a larger document and should start at, say, 47. Ticking "Skip the first page" leaves a cover or title page blank and starts the count on the page after it. The preview is the real output, rendered from the actual numbered page, so what you see is exactly what you will download. The font, size, colour and distance from the edge are all adjustable. Numbers are drawn as genuine PDF text on top of each page with pdf-lib. The original content is untouched: text stays selectable, nothing is re-compressed, and the file size barely changes. Pages that were saved rotated, which is common with scanned landscape pages, are handled properly, so the number still appears upright at the edge you chose rather than sideways. Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is never uploaded, which matters when the document is a legal bundle or a medical record.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Upload the PDF, choose a position and a format, check the preview, then click 'Add page numbers and download'. Every page is numbered and the new PDF downloads straight away.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Tick 'Skip the first page'. The first page is left unnumbered and the count starts on the second page, at whatever starting number you set.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number to any value. 'Page X of Y' totals adjust to match, so a 10-page PDF starting at 21 ends at 'Page 30 of 30'.

Will adding page numbers change the rest of my PDF?

No. The numbers are added as a thin layer of text on top of each page. The existing text, images and quality are unchanged.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened, numbered and saved entirely inside your browser.
