About this tool
Convert HEIC photos from an iPhone into ordinary JPG files, without uploading them anywhere. Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Apple chose it because it stores the same quality in roughly half the space of a JPEG. The problem is that almost nothing else reads it: most websites reject .HEIC uploads, Windows needs a paid codec to preview them, and job application portals, government forms, print services and older software simply fail. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere. This converter decodes the HEIC using a WebAssembly build of libheif, the same open-source library that powers HEIC support in many Linux and desktop applications, and re-encodes it as JPEG using the Canvas API. Both steps happen inside your browser tab. That local processing matters more here than for most tools. The photos people convert are personal: family pictures, passport scans, photographs of documents, medical paperwork. None of it is uploaded, stored, logged or transmitted, and closing the tab discards everything. If you would rather stop the problem at the source, change the setting on the phone: Settings, then Camera, then Formats, then choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPEG. Photos already on the phone stay HEIC and still need converting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?
Upload your .HEIC file above and click Convert. JPEG is already selected, so you can download the result immediately. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you convert.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11. It stores the same image quality as a JPEG in roughly half the file size, but it is not widely supported outside Apple devices.
Why can't I upload my iPhone photos to a website?
Because the photos are HEIC files, and web browsers other than Safari cannot decode them. Most upload forms either reject the file type outright or accept it and then fail to display the image. Converting to JPG fixes it.
How do I open a HEIC file on Windows?
Windows needs Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and the paired HEVC extension is usually a paid add-on. Converting the file to JPG here avoids that entirely and takes a few seconds.
How do I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC photos?
Open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats, and select 'Most Compatible'. New photos will be saved as JPEG instead. Existing photos remain HEIC and still need converting.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly, because JPEG is a lossy format and the image is re-encoded. At the default 92% quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing. The JPG will usually be a larger file than the HEIC, since HEIC compresses more efficiently.
Are my photos uploaded to your server?
No. Decoding and conversion both happen inside your browser using WebAssembly and the Canvas API. Your photos never leave your device, and nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?
Yes. After the photo is decoded, change the output format to PNG before converting. PNG is lossless but produces a much larger file, so JPEG is the better choice for photographs.
