    About this tool

Cut a rectangle out of a picture and keep only that part, with no editor to install and no account to make. Cropping is the most common edit anyone makes to a photograph, and it is usually for a plain reason: straightening out a badly framed shot, removing a stranger from the edge of a holiday picture, pulling a headshot out of a group photo, trimming the browser chrome off a screenshot, or isolating one panel of a scanned document. The crop is taken at the image's real resolution, not at the size it happens to be displayed on screen. The preview scales a large photo down to fit the page, and the selection you drag is scaled back up before the cut is made, so cropping a 4000 pixel wide photo gives you 4000 pixel wide detail rather than a blurry copy of the on-screen preview. That distinction is the difference between a crop you can print and one you cannot. The result is saved as a PNG, which is lossless. Cropping and saving does not re-compress the part you kept, so it comes out exactly as sharp as it was in the original. Everything happens inside your browser on your own machine. The picture is never uploaded, which matters for the passport photos, bank statements and private pictures people crop far more often than they crop landscapes.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I crop an image online for free?

Upload the picture, drag a box across the part you want to keep, and click Crop Image. The cropped result appears below with a download button. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many times you can do it.

Does cropping reduce the quality of my photo?

No. The crop is taken from the image at its original resolution and saved as a lossless PNG, so the pixels you keep are identical to the pixels you started with. You lose the area outside the selection and nothing else.

Can I crop to an exact size or aspect ratio?

The selection here is freehand, so you drag whatever rectangle you want. If you need an exact pixel size, crop roughly to the area you want and then set precise dimensions in the Image Resizer. For a passport or ID photo with a required ratio, the Passport Photo Maker enforces the correct size for each country.

How do I redo a crop I got wrong?

Just drag a new selection anywhere on the original image; the previous box is replaced. The original stays on screen untouched until you upload a different file, so you can crop it as many times as you like.

What format is the cropped image saved in?

PNG. It is lossless, so nothing is degraded by the save, and it keeps transparency if the source image had any. If you need a smaller file afterwards, run the PNG through the Image Compressor.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image is read into your browser and the crop is performed on a canvas on your own device. Nothing is transmitted or stored, so it is safe for identity documents, medical images and anything else you would not want on someone else's server.

Can I crop on a phone or tablet?

The selection is drawn with a mouse drag, so a device with a pointer works best. On a touchscreen it is easier to crop in your photo app first and use this tool on a desktop when you need a precise cut at full resolution.
